Abstract

Doxycycline, a tetracycline antibiotic, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the tetracycline class and is used for treatment of various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. In the treatment of chronic bacterial infections, the administration of doxycycline in combination with an appropriate antibiotic is effective in killing the causative microorganisms and is generally accepted to be safe. However, the development of drug-resistant strains of microorganisms is a growing concern in recent years and the development of drug-resistant strains of microorganisms is of growing concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of doxycycline and trimethoprim on the bacterial growth ofEscherichia colistrains resistant to doxycycline alone, doxycycline plus trimethoprim, or doxycycline plus doxycycline. The isolates were grown at 25°C and tested for growth ofE. colistrains sensitive to doxycycline or trimethoprim. The MIC values of doxycycline and trimethoprim againststrains sensitive to doxycycline were 2.0 and 2.8-fold, respectively. At the same time, strain K12 was also sensitive to doxycycline. The results show that doxycycline alone had a positive effect on the growth ofstrains sensitive to doxycycline and that the combination of doxycycline and trimethoprim had a positive effect on the growth ofstrains sensitive to doxycycline. The results also showed that the growth ofstrains K12 andwere not influenced by the combination of doxycycline and trimethoprim. These results suggest that the combination of doxycycline and trimethoprim does not affect the growth ofstrains resistant to doxycycline or the growth ofstrains sensitive to trimethoprim. However, the growth ofstrains sensitive to doxycycline and trimethoprim was reduced by the combination of doxycycline and trimethoprim, and the growth ofstrains sensitive to doxycycline was not affected. This suggests that the combination of doxycycline and trimethoprim does not affect the growth ofstrains sensitive to trimethoprim or doxycycline. Thus, this study suggests that doxycycline is not a good antibiotic when used in combination with trimethoprim for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections.
